Prof. Hao Chen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and the Division of Life Science at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He leads the SMART Lab, which focuses on developing trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) for healthcare. He also serves as the Director of the Collaborative Center for Medical and Engineering Innovation, Co-Director of the Center for Evolution and Health, and Associate Director of the Center for Medical Imaging and Analysis at HKUST.

Prof. Chen’s research interests include medical image analysis, AI, machine learning, computer vision, and bioinformatics. He has over 100 publications (Google Scholar citations more than 35,000, h-index 64) in top-tier journals and conferences, including MICCAI, IEEE-TMI, Medical Image Analysis, CVPR, ICCV, AAAI, Radiology, Nature Communications, Lancet Digital Health, Nature Machine Intelligence, and JAMA. He holds a dozen of patents in AI and medical image analysis. He received several premium awards, including the Asian Young Scientist Fellowship in 2023, the Prestigious Achievement Award of OMIA-X in 2023, the MICCAI Young Scientist Impact Award in 2019, recognition in Forbes China’s 30 under 30, and several best paper awards. In 2020, he was recognized by Nature Index as one of the six researchers shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
